K. Satchidanandan ( b. 1946) poet, critic, translator, playwright , travel -writer and academic has served as Professor of English in Christ college affiliated to the Calicut University, Professor and Director of the Centre for Translation Studies IGNOU, Editor of ‘Indian Literature’ and Secretary, Sahitya Akademi ( National cadmy of Letters) and was until recently, National Fellow, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. His first collection of poems, Anchu Sooryan ( Five Suns) came out in 1971 and since then he has published more than 20 collections of poetry. His ‘Collected Poems, 1965-2015’ in Malayalam came out in 2016 when he reached 70 ( D C Books, Kottayam ). A 600-page volume of his Malayalam poems in his own English translation , ‘The Missing Rib’ also came out in 2016. ( Poetrywala, Bombay) that includes poems from his earlier collections like While I Write ( Harper-Collins, 2011) and The Misplaced Objects and Other Poems ( Sahitya Akademi, 2013) . He has also authored 20 collections of essays on literature, philosophy and social issues, two plays, four books of travelogues and a memoir in Malayalam besides four books on comparative Indian literature in English. He has 8 collections of poetry in Hindi translation and has 24 collections of his poetry in other languages including French, Italian, German, Irish, Arabic, Chinese and English besides most of the major Indian languages. His translations from world poetry into Malayalam have recently been collected in four volumes of around 450 pages each. Satchidanandan has also edited three literary journals in Malayalam and more than 25 books of poetry and essays in Malayalam and English. He has represented India in several literary festivals and book fairs in various countries of Europe like France, Germany, Spain, England, Netherlands, Russia, Latvia and Slovenia besides South American countries like Peru, Cuba, Colombia and Venezuela, Asian countries including China and Thailand and all the Gulf countries and the United States of America, several times. He has won 47 awards for his literary contribution, including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award ( for poetry, drama, travelogue, translation, besides C B Kumar endowment award for critical essays), National Sahitya Akademi Award, Kuvempu National Award( Karnataka), NTR National award and Bappureddy Ntional Award ( Andhrapradesh), Kusumagraj National Award ( Maharashtra), Gangadhar Meher National Award and Kavisamrat Upendra Bhanja award ( Orissa), besides all the major literary awards in Kerala including Vayalar Award, P. Kunjiraman Nair Award, Ulloor Award, Kesari Nayanar Award, MNVijayan Award, P. Govindapillai Award, SBT Suvarna Mudra award, Kavyotsava Award, Odakkuzhal Award and Ezhuthachhan Award, the topmost literary award given by the Government of Kerala to any writer in the language ( 2016) He is a Fellow of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and was awarded Sahitya Shree by Delhi Hindi Academy. He has been honoured with Knighthood by the Govt of Italy, Dante Medal by Dante Institute, Ravenna, International Poetry for Peace Award by the government of UAE, and Indo-Polish Friendship Medal by the Govt of Poland. His name also figured in the Ladbroke list of the first ten probable Nobel Prize winners in 2011. Satchidanandan lives with his family in Delhi.
