The Chair
The idea to have a poet’s chair was born with the sight of the Arabian sea from Tushar’s apartment. It was the month of end-May heralding monsoons in Mumbai in 2011. With thick clouds gathering over the Arabian Sea and the impish play of colours on ocean, the poet-artist decided to design a chair which could be placed by the huge window facing the sea, where he would take flights of fancies and lose himself in the captivating intricacies of imageries. So, a chair had to be designed, a rocking chair that could also be used as a desk for writing and sketching. A local carpenter was called and was handed over the design. The chair was born in the month of June 2012 in a mahogany avatar!
Ever since, so long as Tushar lived in Mumbai, the Chair occupied a place of pride in his home and has comforted many artists and poets. So far it has witnessed 3 books being written on its desk and a few hundred sketches yielding some 30 odd paintings on canvas. It was sitting on this chair by the sea side that Sonnet Mondal wrote the poem ‘From Tushar’s Apartment’.
It was a sultry evening in the month of late September 2017, a month after Tushar’s relocation to Kolkata, when an informal evening of poetry was arranged at his residence. One by one all the poets sat on the Chair and recited their poems. The poets exclaimed, that was a wonderful evening, the Chair Poetry Evening. Later in February 2018, Sonnet and Tushar came together with the idea of uniting the vast and diverse world of poetry by inviting poets from all across the globe to an annual event called The Chair Poetry evenings in Kolkata. Thus the Chair Poetry Evenings was born !

The Festival
The Chair Poetry Evenings presents poets from around the globe with an eye to tell stories through those voices which have enabled poetry to come thus far over time. We do not have a general audience, but this platform stands for those for whom poetry is the best medium of articulation in extreme situations; for whom pen is a weapon to confront and defeat lifelong dilemmas and confusions. We present poets as the knights of language, for whom poetry is the blade and thoughts, the shield. For us poetry is ice in deserts and fire in frost.
