Arun Dev

  • Death poems
<
>
1.
The tattered clothe
Has gone
Lacklustre,
The threads can’t hold together,

It’s impossible for them to grab a new colour,
Says the dyer.

Marking the knots gone haywire,
The mender looks elsewhere.

2.
The sky overcast with stars,
The moon floating on waves,
The wind mild,

In a remote corner on the other side of the river
Leapt up fire
Beyond the pyre

3.
Lay me on the ground,
The straw is my bread,
My pillow rests in the north.

Cover with my fire,
The downcast river would help me flow across

4.
People die before death
Out of the fear of death,
Death touches not the dead

translated from Hindi by Anamika
